Basic Stitches
The basic stitches below are all made made out of a various combination of knit and purl stitches.
Garter Stitch
-
Start with casting on the number of stitches required for your project.
-
Row 1 (right side): knit all stitches.
-
Row 2 (wrong side): knit all stitches.
-
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until the end of the pattern or the project as appropriate.
The end product will have alternating rows of knit and purl stitches. Both sides of the fabric will looks the same and will have some stretch vertically.

Stockinette Stitch
1. Start with casting on the number of stitches required for your project.
2. Row 1 (right side): knit all stitches.
3. Row 2 (wrong side): purl all stitches.
4. Repeat rows 1 & 2 until the end of the pattern or the project as appropriate.
The end product will have rows of stitch knits on one side and rows of purl stitch on the other side. This fabric will have very little stretch. It is also known to curl inwards. Combining the stockinette stitch with other knitting techniques and/or blocking the end product will help reduce the curls at the edges.
